A few of my favorite magazines…

I love a good magazine as much as the next girl. I especially love them during the holidays. They are such a fun place to get outfit ideas, the newest makeup tips and so on & so on.

The other day when I was taking a little break at Target…I picked up my copies of People Style Watch  & In Style.

Not only do I love a good read, but I got a $5 Target Gift Card when I bought the 2 magazines. Sweet! So, no magazine reading time is complete without Mint M&M’s-I picked up some of those as well!
There were a couple of articles in People Style Watch,  that caught my eye-

I wanted to say bravo to People Style Watch for having articles that target the “average & Plus sized woman.” I am far from a size 2, so I loved the articles about a LBD (little black dress) and 5 ways to wear sparkle!
I also really enjoyed the 7 beauty steals for $25 & under. I am a makeup junkie, so I always love a good makeup tip. beauty steals under $25 people magazine campaign 008
People-run don’t walk to Target to get your own copies of  In Style & People Style Watch & your $5 gift card! The awesomeness ends on the 7th.

Back to School with Volunteer Spot

I have a question for you. How do you support your kids school? I was recently asked this by, and it got my wheels turning.

I’m signing up to _____________ here’s why.

This simple sentence got me thinking. I have 3 girls. I know, I know, and yes, the drama at our house could be measured in tons.  I love them all a lot..most of the time.  My oldest daughter is 12. She started 7th grade this year. Where we live, this is the first year of Jr. High.

kinli 7th grade collage

Da-da-da-dum…I remember Jr. high, but I really wish that I didn’t. I am sure that you remember it as well. We were trying to figure out what was going on with our bodies. We desperately wanted to fit in and we would do anything to not stand out.

So, that brings me to the question-I’m signing up to  BE INVOLVED & here’s why.
As I just pointed out, Jr high can be brutal. And we all know that kids can be mean. I wanted to be involved in my 12 yr. olds first experience of Jr. high.  So, I signed up to help be in charge of the PTSA.  There are 3 adults that run this little group of kids. We are in charge of stomps (for those of you outside of Utah-this is a very, non-formal dance-usually in the day) making and hanging posters and other activities.  The kids that are in the group are called “peer leaders.” Think school officer, minus the jacket.  Anyway, my 12 yr. old is a peer leader. So, this was a perfect way for me to be involved without seeming too overbearing.

It may seem like a small and simple thing, but to me, it’s huge. I have the opportunity to see my daughter interact with her friends and see her in her school element. All without being too pushy, or one of “those moms.”  She won’t admit that she likes me being there, but I know that she does.

This world is scary. It is not a secret that the meaning of a family is becoming less and less important. Technology is becoming more and more important. Our kids want to spend less time with us, their parents and family, and  spend way more time online, texting, or doing anything else that doesn’t involve us.

This is why I am doing all that I can to be more involved with my 12 yr. old.  I am hoping that I can become the “cool mom!” I realize that she might never ever admit that, and I am ok with that. I will know that she appreciates me being involved, even if she won’t tell her friends. It will be our little secret.

You know when..

Your house looks like this

and this

and this?

Oh, and do you ever have to sprinkle, liberally dump the whole box of baking soda on the floor because your sweet husband shampooed the carpets and now the "dog" smell is worse than ever?

Oh, & don't even get me started on the laundry. They can all go naked right?
Or, better yet, turn a shirt inside out.

Yep-it's totally one of those days!

Guess, I should go and vacuum and stuff.

I really, really need a Diet Coke...and a maid..and some sanity!

It's all in the way you LOoK at things....

Merry Christmas!

I hope that all of you had a fabulous day!
I think, no, I  know, that we had one of the best Christmas Days ever!
It wasn't all the stuff that my children got (holy crap, I know they were not THAT good-I was there :)
or all the food that we ate (hmmmm, the leftovers are calling my name.)
or even the fantastic 3 hour nap that my husand and I the middle of the day! (yes, it was heavenly!)

It was the company.
It wasn't that the company was different people.
Yes, my extended family has grown, but my little family has stayed the same.
There was just something different about today.
Honestly-I couldn't quite put my finger on it..until now.
Actually-it was almost an hour ago, but the thought came to me while I was in the shower.
The difference this year-was me. I was more "present."

This is me and my family.
I am no one incredibly special, talented, or inspired. In fact, I am a yeller, I hate to do the dishes and I am too lazy to take my dog out for a walk when it's cold outside.

BUT-I am a lover of my glue gun, my children, my husband, and give me a good decorating magazine, and I am a happy girl! I find inspiration in strange, everyday, really you got a decorating idea for your bathroom from a movie type of gal.

The reason why I am telling all of you this.
We ended our crazy, fun and memory filled day with a movie and blankets.
There was fighting over who got to sit where and whines of why it wasn't fair that I got to drink Diet Coke in the family room and they didn't. (because I said so, that's why!)

Then the movie started, and my opinion about lots of stuff changed.

We watched Ramona and Beezus.  (a darling show!)
It wont win an Oscar, or any special awards, but to me, it will hold a special place.
We all laughed at the show and I cried when the cat died.

Then I started to notice some things.
I noticed how cute the pillow was on the movie living room couch.
The darling lamp shade in Ramona's new room.
I noticed that Ramona made up a superb new word-FANTASTICAL.
I also noticed that this family was far from perfect. They didn't have a lot of money, they had their own trials, but they always seemed to remember to look at the things that they did have.
No matter what!
As embarrassed as I am to say this-this little movie whispered to me-
"it's all in the way you LOOK at things."

I decided that I am going to start looking at everyday things a little different.
The cute designs on pillows, the fun lampshades, the way my 2 big girls giggle themselves to sleep every night or even the fact that ALL of my children ate what I cooked for dinner.
I am going to start looking around me for things that inspire.
I am going take a mental note, or even a real note. (this would be done only because I will NOT remember the mental note. Maybe I should make a mental notebook. :)
When something or someone inspires me some way.

Who knew a movie would do this to me?
Funny, right?
I know that some of you are thinking that I am crazy.
That's ok-for the most part, I am.
I have accepted this as a fact, not just a trait:)
(scary? :)

I am happy that I cried with Ramona when her kitty died and I am thrilled that my girls and I are going to make our own version of the world longest picture.
I got little butterflies when I heard the word TERRIFICAL and knew that I finally had a plan how I was going to decorate my stairway wall.

So-I am going to change the way I look at things.
I am going to look at every day as an opportunity to tell my girls how fabulous they are.
Terrifical even.
I am going to start noticing the little things in my world that offer me inspiration for my home, my refuge from the world. My place where my family-will feel loved, important and safe.
Thought that you would all like to come along with me.

My goal is to share the ideas and inspiration that come from random places, (cause that's how I roll)
with all of you.
Now, please don't expect every day posts.
I do have to be realistic. :)
But please expect a dose of inspiration of some sort every time you visit my little blog.

I want you to leave my little piece of this digital world a happier, maybe,if I am having a really good day,  a little more inspired person.
And if I am doing it right, you will also feel more confident, excited and just a bit more smiley in general.

Christmas this year was incredible!
My greatest gift-the soft reminder of..
It's all in the way you LoOk at things.

Merry Christmas All!!
Talk to you all soon!!

**Today's Terrificalness:***
gain inspiration from the people that you love you.
AND totally borrow their fabulous accessories!

This is my family-I know that they love me. (most of the time)
They inspire me, keep me on my toes, and most of the time, make me happy!

You can't tell that we are related..right?!  Ha!

A little less decorating...

Ok-So I know I usually blog about decorating and how to do it on the cheap.
I give tips on how to shop the thrift stores, how to spray paint and how to drink diet coke and eat chocolate all at the same time.
I know, I know, I am super cool.
but..I just had to get this off my chest.
If you don't want to read my opinion on some things other than decorating-than don't read this post.
I'll be back to regularly scheduled programming tomorrow.

So..I just got my Ballard Designs catalog today in the mail.
I have to make a confession..Before blogging I had never even heard of Ballard Designs-let alone looked at one of their catalogs.
I was ok with this.
I was totally ok with the fact that no magazine or retail store told me what I should like or how I should want my home to look.

I was ok with my home-the way I loved it.
Now, don't get me wrong, I have learned a lot from great decorating blogs. I do love to cruise total strangers blogs and get a look at their homes.

The one thing I don't like-is comparing myself to everyone out there.
Maybe I am lame to admit this-but I am hoping that I am not the only one out there who feels this way.
Sometimes I blog-and I hope so much-that you-the other women out there in blog land will like me. I let others opinions shape how I feel about myself, my home and my ideas.

Yes-I totally understand that we only post the best of the best.
We stage pics, we try to get the good lighting and then we photo shop to get the absoulate best we can get.
And yes-I know all of this-yet I still compare.

I tell myself that my home isn't good enough.
I tell myself that what I look alike isn't good enougth.
My size of jeans are too big-my lips are to small and my arms don't look like they used too.
I have dishes on the counter, crushed cereal on the floor and toothpaste in the sink.

Then...I get on the computer and look at everyones Better homes and gardens pics and think...
"their life is so much prettier than my life."
I bet they don't blog in the their pajamas and blatanly ignore their children who are killing themselves in the corner.

So..I am here to confess.
I am one of those women who do all of the above.
I also drink too much diet coke and I feel guilty when I don't exercise. Which is never.

BUT....I am also a wife to a man that any woman would be lucky to have. A mom to three beautiful girls, who everyday remind how lucky I am to have 3 heads of hair to do just right.
I love to create my house into a haven, a refuge from life's storm.
I am blessed to tuck my girls into bed every night and I know that they love me no matter what size my pants are, if my dishes are done, or if my home looks like it should be in a catalog.

So..I guess this post was really just for me.
But.. if there is any one else out there who feels this way.
Know that you are in good company!

Thanks for listening to my rant!
I will be back with more spray painting lunacy tomorrow.

Love you all...
