Ok-that might be giving myself just a little bit too much credit…but I am pretty proud of how this room turned out.
Is that bad to be proud of space in your home?
Oh well if it is, I like to not be “normal.” Normal is wayyyy over-rated!
I don’t know about any of you, but I have never really liked my master bedroom. It has always been the last on my list when it comes to decorating.
Not sure why though. It’s MY room, why should it not be given just as much attention as any other room in the house.
Oh yea, nobody ever sees it. Well, that maybe the case normally, but lately, everyone that has stepped foot in my front door has been offered to see my bedroom.
Ha! told you that I think that Normal is overrated!
I took some inspiration from Pottery Barn. Why? because overall, I love their idea of décor. Sophisticated meets classy, meets relaxing. I do not however, like their prices. Do you think if I sent them an email they would lower them, just for me? Even if I said pretty please?
My whole master bedroom was done for $50 bucks-ish. After I typed that last night, I thought about it,and was probably closer to $60. That even included the fabulous new 96” quilted, yummy, Waverly curtain panels. Why did I have to buy new? Well, lets just say that one should not try to paint one’s curtains. One should just suck it up and buy new and save themselves the grief.
Not that I did that or anything…
Wondering what inspired my master bedroom redo?
Well, I blame it all on this stencil!
And the company that makes them.
Cutting Edge Stencils was just what I didn’t know I was looking for, until I found them. When I saw this stencil, I knew that it would be the perfect mix of masculine and feminine look that I was looking for.
The fabulous people at Cutting Edge sent me some stencils STAT to try out. I have to admit that I was a little intimidated in the beginning. BUT-then I just bit the bullet and went to town!
Have I mentioned that I love Cutting Edge and their stencils? Just want to make that clear.
Now, I must clarify that these stencils are not your 1993 puffy heart and duck stencils. These stencils would be the i-pad to the 8 track of stencils. Not kidding!
So, want to see what my room looked like before? Of course you do!
Yes-I know, worse than you thought right? AND-I didn’t even stage it to look this crappy!
And the after! Ahh-like a breath of fresh air! (insert sarcastic tone here)
You can see that the stencil pattern is not screaming “look at me” when you walk into the room. I used a paint color that was 2 shades darker than the wall color, and it was a high gloss instead of semi. I wanted the stencil to have a little glow-without being neon.
FYI-in case you want to know-my wall color is called Homestead Resort Moss (semi) and the stencil color is La Fonda Deep Olive.(high gloss) Both paint colors are Valspar from Lowes.
Nadia Stencil from Cutting Edge-master bedroom
Going to Seed Stencil-Hallway
I do have some tips, and ideas that I want to tell you, cause I know that you are all going to want to stencil after seeing this! (maybe being a tad presumptuous)
Supplies needed for a beyond Awesome stenciling experience:
Stencil or stencils-
Clip on stencil level (very helpful if one of your legs is longer than the other)
Spray Adhesive-Elmer’s works the best. It doesn’t leave a residue and it’s not too sticky to handle.
Paint color of your choice-Depending on your walls size, you can more than likely get away with a quart or less.
Ready for the instructions?
1-attach the level to the stencil.
2- spray the back of the stencil with the spray adhesive. Make sure that you get the little pieces. This is important for the crisp edges.
(spray adhesive can make a mess-use a towel or something to cover the carpet)
3- put the stencil on the wall-make sure it’s straight-Level, level, level!!
4-roll on the paint.
Start at the bottom of the wall, or practice before you stencil the “real” wall. This will just help you be able to know how much paint you need on the roller to get the look that you want.
5-Take your stencil off the wall
6-repeat as needed-the paint dries to the touch quite quickly, so overlap as needed. Don’t be afraid!
7-Step back and look how amazing your wall (s) look and reward yourself with chocolate or cheesecake, or both!
I promise you, it really is that simple!
Even your husband will be impressed! Best part of this deal-you can do it about 2 hours. Really, you can! I enlisted my little sis to come and help, but by the time that she got to my house, I was almost done. I had no idea it would be that simple!
Now for some of the details in my room. AND, a few other places that I used some stencil love! (yep, made some stencils of my own-totally easy as well!!
Crappy before:
Way better after. See the glow on the stencil! LOVE it!
See my awesome, too short, curtains? I know, you are so jealous, right?
Look at this lovely after. So soft ad inviting. too bad I can’t make all of my pics look like this.
Old rocking chair from the garage and old suitcases stacked for a side table. Throw and pillows, courtesy of my stash in the garage. Yes-I have a throw and pillow stash. Don’t judge-I have a problem.I know, I know!
Me and my hunny on his side of the bed. I wanted him to be able to enjoy my face at all times! Too much? Nah! Also, my collectin of heart shaped rocks. I may or may not have bribed my children to find these while vacationing.
Also-check out the crate! An old crate I had in the garage. I made the No. stencil. The number 12 is the number of years we have been married. I know, corny, right?
Lamp that once was black-sprayed white and stained to match it’s long lost brother. Picture from the year 2000 and my wedding cake topper. (I was beyond impressed that I found this!) I of course added some books, and a green, ball, sphere thing that was $3 at Downeast home.
His nightstand-and old sewing table sprayed black. A lamp from the thrift store, old books and a super cute alarm clock that doesn’t work. I don’t care, it’s too cute not too display!
The view of my window. Sorry-hard to see, but I had to show one of my favorite things in the room.
I typed out the lyrics to our “song” printed them up and framed them.
In case you are wondering, Love of a Lifetime by Firehouse.
I so remember this song from my 8th grade dance. I stood there thinking that this is such a great song and wishing that someone would ask me to dance. (they didn’t) BUT-this lame, old 1993 memory made me appreciate this song even more when it played in my hunny’s truck on our first date. Mushy and lame…yes, but I love it!
Lets be reminded of the before again…shall we?
And the after! (just humor me by looking at the same thing over again.)
Wait..hold the phone! (I’ve always wanted to say that)
Just in case you want to know about how to make your own Mr. and Mrs.Pillow-check out the tutorial here! It’s simple-promise!
I also forgot to mention what is hanging above my bed. Well, the people that lived here before us left a full size head and footboard under the house.
SCORE!
I have been saving them for years. Waiting for just the right use. This was it’s big moment. I had my sweet, loving husband cut off the legs and hang it up on the wall.
(he so rolled his eyes when I asked him to do this-a normal reaction for me)
I love the detail of the wood inlay. Plus-it was the perfect size and it was FREE!!!!
Best Part about this whole post-you can win some money to get your own stencils!
I know-score right?
